Serra
San Bruno
Serra San Bruno lies inland in the middle of the Calabrian
Apennines. It houses a true architectural jewel. The
church of San Biagio from the year 1795 gleams with
a pretty baroque façade. Inside you will find a white
marble floor as well as four marble statues which are
worth taking a good look at. The
most famous sight here is the Certosa (Charterhouse),
Italy's first Carthusian monastery, which is situated
in a pretty forest. It was founded between 1090 and
1101 by Saint Bruno from Cologne. Now there are only
a few monks who look forward to our visits when they
are not praying. However, only men are allowed to enter
the monastery. Serra San Bruno is known for its works
of art and fascinating century old pine and beech woods
where many varieties of mushrooms thrive.
